Respiration

State the word and balanced chemical equation for aerobic respiration

Aerobic respiration is a chemical reaction that transfers energy to cells involving oxygen.

C6H12O6 + 6O2 →  6CO2 + 6H2O + 38ATP

Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

State the word equation for anaerobic respiration

Anaerobic respiration is the process of producing cellular energy without the usage of oxygen.

Glucose → lactic acid + energy

Label the structure of a mitochondrion and describe the functions of the parts

Mitochondria is the organelle in a cell that generates most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions. The energy produced is stored in ATP (Adenosine 5′-triphosphate) form.

MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CE

Intermembrane space:
Small space to quickly accumulate protons.

Inner membrane:
It contains ETC and ATP synthase for oxidative phosphorylation.

Outer membrane:
Contains transport perkins for shuttling pyruvate into mitochondria.

Matrix:
Hass appropriate enzymes and a suitable pH for Krebs cycle.

Cristae:
Highly folded so as to increase surface area to volume ratio.

Suggest uses of anaerobic respiration in industry

  • Anaerobic respiration is used to make alcoholic drinks such as beer
  • It is also used to make baked goods that involve the fermentation of yeast, such as bread.
